Buddhism is practiced many different ways all over the world. Vajrayana is commonly called Tibetan Buddhism as it was popularized in Tibet.
It is very hard to sit in open meditation- if you've noticed this yourself don't be discouraged! Tibetan Buddhism is designed to get you there gradually; while open meditation is incorporated at all levels, it isn't until the higher stages that it is used as a main practice due to its difficulty.
Vajrasattva, our group meditation, uses the power of thought instead of trying to ignore it. With visualization, mantra, and conceptualization, it is a very effective means of developing concentration and awareness. It is also a joyful practice, and very effective karma management.
