Buddhism is practiced many different ways all over the world. Vajrayana is commonly called Tibetan Buddhism as it was popularized in Tibet.
It is very hard to sit in open meditation- if you've noticed this yourself don't be discouraged! Tibetan Buddhism is systematically designed to get you there gradually. While open meditation is incorporated at all levels, it isn't the main focus until higher stages of practice.
The meditation of Vajrasattva uses the power of thought instead of trying to ignore it. With visualization, mantra, and conceptualization, it is a very effective means of purifying karma and developing concentration and awareness. It is a joyful practice, a warm bath for the mind!
